hanndling of the business in the South China field”.

If in these circumstances we had not been able to fall in with their wishes that we should accept a new cargo, they would no doubt have thrown up the thing in disgust and accepted the proposals of our competitors, which they certainly must have received, because a valuable agency like this does not go a-begging.

I should like to write you more about this matter and one or two other mattere which you have raised in your letters, but it is already late on Saturday, and all I can do is to get this better off.

I might still confirm here the telegram which I sent you yesterday:

"Cheetham cabled acceptance, leaving as telegraphed

"Shanghai for Hongkong in about four weeks). agreements made, vessel chartered alteration impossible, (ae) would lose agency"

All

The principal object of this cable was to telegraph you in

regard to Cheetham, and, as I have not confirmed in writing

our telegram to you of the 20th, I added a few words to make sure that you should understand the position, even if my first tele- gram were not then before you.

Apropos of what you wrote the other day about the Chartered Bank, it is not only that we ourselves have experienced their rudeness even allowing for the fact that the Bank was

hard hit by the troubles at the time, as we heard from various

quartere but people such as Roskills, Hinrickson and two of three other rich concerns all told us the same story; one man of a very wealthy firm asked V for a, for him, small credit of 210,000 and was offered £4,000 which he indignantly refused, proceeding to the Hongkong Bank who were only too pleased to

accomodate him. Of course the C.B. will now try to make out

in order to save their face that the position of the respective firms was not sound enough for them to grant ordinary facilities.
